Hair Friday: Weekly dose of TBD!

The Beauty Department's DIY: SPARKLING STAR HAIR CLIPS

DIY: SPARKLING STAR HAIR CLIPS

photos/post/graphic design: Kristin Ess
Tis almost the holiday season, friends! Too often we busy bees are under-prepared for all the parties, all the photos + all the gift giving. This DIY will help us look lovely and stay ahead of schedule.
I was in Anthropologie the other day. I LIVE for that place, but you can easily rack up a major bill… fast. For the last couple years I’ve been buying these sparkly, flower-shaped hair clips. They’re stunning, but they’re $20-30 each. It’s cute to make a cluster of them behind a topknot or above a chignon, but it would cost a fortune if you bought that many. Let’s save some money and make them ourselves, shall we? This way you’re ahead of the gal pal gift-giving game and/or you’ll have something around that you can quickly clip in your hair for some sparkle when you’re running behind for a holiday fĂȘte! Here we go!

  1. Get some sparkly appliques from a sewing supply store, fabric store or craft store.
  2. Ask someone in the fabric store for swatches of fabric that compliment your sparkly applique.
  3. Get a pack of snap clips.
  4. Trace around the applique, leaving an excess 1/4″ on each side.
  5. Cut just inside your mark so there’s no pen marks on the fabric you’re going to use.
  6. Lay your clip on the back of the fabric and make a mark at the base of the clip.
  7. Cut a little slit.
  8. Slide the clip through.
  9. After you slide the clip through, flip it over and hot glue the base and tip to the fabric.
  10. Now set the applique over the side where you see the top of the clip (see photo 10).
  11. Trim and perfect the edges.
  12. Hot glue the applique to the fabric.

Exchange these with all your girls and compile your own eclectic mix. Let’s see the ones you make! Tweet us a photo @TBDofficial.

Hair Friday: TBD'S Coiled & Cute Bun

A TWIST ON THE LOW BUN

photos/post/design: Kristin Ess
Here’s another fun, cute way to pull your hair up off your shoulders during a hot, hot heatwave! It’s basically a topsy-tail looped through so many times that it starts to coil. Here we go!

photos/post/design: Kristin Ess
  1. Gather all of your hair into a ponytail in the back and secure with an elastic (we used a clear one, but you can also use one that matches your hair color. It should be neither high nor low, but somewhere in the middle.
  2. Carefully drag the ponytail holder down to the bottom of your ponytail. We stayed about 3 inches away from the ends so we would have something to tuck in at the end (you’ll see).
  3. Split the hair down the middle as you see in photo 3.
  4. When you loop the hair through go under toward your neck first and then up through the hole– not up and over the way you would normally do a topsy tail loop.
  5. Keep going.
  6. Keep going. It will start to coil up and get tighter.
  7. Once it coils up all the way, you’ll start to see it form a bun shape. Use large bobbypins to secure it.
  8. Now tuck the tail under, secure it with a bobbypin and smooth down any fly aways using hairspray and a tail comb. You want it to look tight and shiny– this is not a messy ‘do.
As you may notice in the top/final photo, we used our secret colored hair powder trick to minimize the visible part where the scalp was showing! Good luck, this one should be fairly easy. Hopefully you have a mirror that you can see the back, if not check the back using a hand mirror or compact when you’re done to make sure no little pieces are poking out. Let us know how it goes on TWITTER!

New King James Version (NKJV)
38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Nailspiration Tuesday: TBD's Nail Polish Storage

This is a real awesome idea! Gotta give it a try and get organized! ;)

DIY NAIL POLISH STORAGE IDEA

photos/post/graphic design: Kristin Ess
It’s fall cleaning time, girls!! Here’s a fancy little idea for storing your nail polish collection. We all love to have a few favorite colors sitting out on the vanity but since nail art has become such a huge trend, you may be the proud owner of LOTS of polishes. In this DIY, you’ll basically be giving a shoe box a quick “pretty paper” makeover and then filling it up with your polish. But instead of just throwing your polishes in the box, we’re going to put dots on top so you can keep the box nice and neat! Here we go:
  1. Find an old shoe box. Plain ones work just the same, but try finding one with a little charm! I grabbed this one because it had this pretty bright coral color on the inside!
  2. Paint small white labels with each color of polish. Use white labels so you can really see the true color of the polish. Remember to keep the bottles lined up in the same order as the stickers so you don’t end up putting the wrong color on the wrong bottle! Once these labels with polish on them have fully dried, use a standard hole puncher to pop out circles from the label.
  3. Apply the circle you punched out to the tops of the bottle.
  4. Pick a pretty paper for your shoe box. I chose 2. I found this patterned gold wallpaper at the Container Store and I got gold tissue paper there, too. I’m using the gold tissue paper for the lid. It’s fun to mix + match. Pattern on pattern would probably be really fun as well.
  5. Cut and wrap your shoe box. I used spray adhesive from the craft store to attach the paper to my shoe box, but if you don’t have that you can just use scotch tape.
  6. FILLERUP! Place the polishes in the shoe box in any order you want. I usually go rainbow-y so particular colors are easier to locate.
Good luck! If you do this, we’d love to see a photo of yours @TBDofficial!

Matthew 5:11-12

New King James Version (NKJV)
11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
